Crafting Your Digital Identity: Personal Branding in the Age of Social Media

Your Digital Story: Building a Personal Brand Through Social Media

Personal Branding is the reputation you possess and how others perceive and talk about you when you are not present. Marcos Salazar explained in a TED Talk that reflects the image, values, and credibility that you project. Personal branding has evolved from multiple influences. Tom Peters is widely considered one of its pioneers, with his piece "The Brand Called You" (1997), which was later expanded into "The Brand You 50" (2001). Marketers David McNally and Karl Speak (1999) popularised the concept with “Be Your Own Brand”. Social media has intensified the necessity of intentional branding, which has allowed people to showcase their distinct identities to worldwide audiences.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PERSONAL BRANDING

Personal branding is the deliberate process of defining and communicating one's value. According to Avery and Greenwald (2021), your brand should be accurate, coherent, compelling, and differentiated. By actively controlling how others perceive you, you may avoid misconceptions and build a consistent story that emphasises your distinctiveness.

USING SOCIAL MEDIA FOR PERSONAL BRANDING

Social media platforms offer tools for establishing and maintaining a consistent personal brand. LinkedIn allows professionals to exhibit skills and accomplishments, Twitter (X) offers thought leadership with timely insights, Instagram and TikTok allow for creative visual storytelling, and Facebook promotes community participation. Best practices include adopting a consistent profile image and banner, maintaining a similar tone of voice across platforms, and linking to personal websites or blogs.
